CHEESY SMELL OF SUCCESS FOR WYNNSTAY HOTEL

October 8, 2008 1:19 PM

Lembit Öpik, Liberal Democrat MP for Montgomeryshire, today congratulated the Wynnstay Hotel in Machynlleth for its victory at the Great British Cheese Festival this weekend for Best Welsh Cheeseboard.

The hotel was also only narrowly pipped for the British title.

The hotel's cheeseboard is an all Welsh showcase with John Savage's Celtic Promise, Talley Goats' Cheese, Henllyr Cheddar, Pontgar Blue and White and Perlas Blue Cheese.

Commenting on the success of the hotel's owners, brothers Gareth and Paul Johns, Lembit Öpik said:

"I offer my hearty congratulations to both Gareth and Paul whose passion for Welsh cheeses has gained the national recognition that this hotel so deserves.

"This is also great news for Welsh cuisine which has seen this hotel go from strength to strength, under the committed guidance of Gareth Johns who has been head chef for 9 years.

"Wales has so many good quality cheeses, and I for one know their great taste. I look forward to hearing more of the hotel's pioneering work in the near future."
