Montgomeryshire AM Mick Bates welcomes the launch of the Kidney Wales Foundation's 'People Like Us Council', which will give a new voice to kidney patients and professionals to raise concerns and increase awareness of the changes needed in renal health care in Wales.
Attending the launch Mick comments: "The Kidney Wales Foundation has been hugely successful in raising awareness of the challenges faced by kidney patients across the country and the changes that we must make to improve our renal services in Wales. I hope that this will add further strength to the establishment of a renal dialysis unit in Welshpool.
"The current system clearly needs improving as over 490 people in Wales are currently on the waiting list for a transplant and we have a vital need for increased dialysis provision across the country.
"I strongly welcome Edwina Hart's rejection of the Health Committee's report on presumed consent for organ donation and I now look forward to a debate on the issue of presumed consent, which has the potential to save so many lives.
"I welcome the launch of the 'People Like Us Council', which will provide a new platform for discussion and a new voice for kidney patients in Wales, so that we can ensure that people with kidney disease can receive the best possible care and support."
