Liberal Democrat AM Mick Bates has voiced his concerns in the chamber over the real impact of the recent announcement on the restructuring of the NHS and whether it will make a difference to the disparity in waiting times between England and Wales.
Commenting Montgomeryshire AM Mick said:
"I welcome the Minister's commitment to reforming the restructuring of the NHS in Wales, but with due caution. In principle it is a sound move, however the potential for political intervention is a real area of concern."
The RTT (referral to treatment) target time in England is 18 weeks by December 2008, but in Wales it is over 25% higher at 26 weeks by 2009.
"It is unacceptable that people in Wales are waiting longer for treatment than their counterparts over the border in England" adds Mick. "This disparity can be overcome by prioritising resources on targeting waiting list reduction.
"The Minister needs to give a firm reassurance that the proposed restructuring will have a real impact on the level of primary and secondary care received by patients across Wales."
