Lembit Öpik, Liberal Democrat MP for Montgomeryshire, has been awarded the GovNet Alternative Politician of the Year 2008 award.
Commenting on the award he said:
"I'm very touched that my inadvertent efforts to surpass the already eccentric nature of most MPs, has finally been recognized.
"I believe that, I've been given this award because of my unceasing commitment to do my politics in an open, honest and direct fashion. I hope that my victory will inspire colleagues to recognise the value of putting your principles above the temptation to comfortably melt into the background. I only hope that more of my fellow MPS will embrace the value of being "alternative" because this kind of courage has the capacity to change things for the better.
"All the same, as the only harmonica playing Irish-Estonian Welsh MP, whose preferred means of transport is the little known Segway Personal Transporter, I pledge to continue to carry the torch for alternative and exciting politics. I hope that the cobwebs of dullness surrounding the political world will be shaken off by the vibrancy of my characterful fortitude."
