Commenting on the BBC's announcement that it is to move half of its network television production out of London within eight years, Liberal Democrat MP for Montgomeryshire, Lembit Öpik, who is a founder member of the All Party BBC Group said:
"I welcome this announcement from the BBC, especially at a time when other broadcasters are so determined to cut back on their commitments to the regions.
"Television production has been concentrated in the capital for decades. Modern technology makes it easy for the sector to spread across the whole of the UK. I am particularly pleased at the plans to double the amount of BBC network programmes made in Wales. Some of the greatest programmes ever made came from the BBC studios in Cardiff, and this decision opens up the possibility of a regional renaissance for the Corporation's programme making.
"The creative economy has been one of the UK's most successful sectors in the past decade. Given the current economic uncertainty, the more we can do to extend that success, the better. And with brands such as Torchwood flying the flag for British creativity, I'm confident that we're standing on the doorstep of a broadcasting bonanza, thanks to the BBC's support for the talent across the regions of the UK."
