Montgomeryshire AM Mick Bates has today challenged the First Minister in the chamber over the disparity between rail network spending in South and Mid Wales.
Commenting Mick stated:
"In South Wales at least ten stations have been opened recently or are in the pipeline and the Regional Transport Plan has dedicated 20% of expenditure on rail improvements. In Mid Wales the last station to be opened was in 1980 and only 1.5% of RTP expenditure will be spent on improvements.
"This disparity is a poor reflection of the hard work of Carno Station Action Group, who as part of their campaign to re-open Carno station have collected over 800 petition signatures, participated in an Enterprise and Learning Committee hearing and spent 6 months carrying out a WelTAG assessment of transport for Carno on behalf of TracC. Yet they have not even been given the recognition of being included in the draft RTP 5 year programme.
"It is vital to ensure that Mid Wales gets back on track with the investment needed and that this Assembly Government no longer neglects the need of rural Wales for an improved rail infrastructure fit for the future."
