Regional transport planning came to Newtown on Thursday evening when the new Regional Transport Planning Group [TraCC] gave a meeting to an audience of over 80 people. The evening was organised by local AM Mick Bates and regional AM's to take the opportunity to engage with the transport needs of local people.
TraCC had previously held their own meetings in Dolgellau, Aberaeron and Llandrindod Wells.
The meeting emphasised the need for much better integrated public transport and an improved service on the Cambrian Line, the need for the re-opening of Carno Station was also a key issue, the longest stretch of railway line in Wales without a station is between Newtown and Machynlleth.
The people also requested real time displays at bus stops and railway stations, because there were complaints that buses sometimes depart prior to the scheduled time.
Commenting after the meeting, Mick Bates said:
"I am pleased that TraCC came to Newtown to see the immense interest that exists in transport issues locally. There must be a recognition that spending money on more and more consultants to write studies that have already been done is a waste of time and money. After the meeting a group of attendees spoke with TraCC to form a new transport group to represent the needs of the Severn Valley."
Anyone wishing to join this group should contact Mick Bates on 01686 625527.
