Montgomeryshire AM Mick Bates has urged the Deputy First Minister in the chamber to offer more support for sustainable transport advice, highlighting the benefits of more fuel efficient driving techniques which can help to reduce carbon emissions from transport as well as save people money on fuel.
Commenting, Welsh Liberal Democrat Mick Bates AM:
"A few weeks ago I took part in the Energy Saving Trust 'Smarter Driving' challenge, which gave advice on how to drive more fuel efficiently to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
"Road transport is responsible for 21% of CO2 emissions in Wales and so it is crucial that we take real action to reduce our emissions from this sector. If we carry on in a 'business as usual' manner, then emissions from the transport sector are expected to rise by 35% between 1990 and 2030.
"The EST have estimated that if everyone in Wales employed smarter driving techniques, then 540,000 tonnes of CO2 could be saved each year, which is 1.5% of Wales' total CO2 emissions. Not only would this help reduce our carbon footprint from the transport sector, but in a time when people are struggling financially it would also help them save money on fuel bills.
"Smarter driving is a smart move for Wales and it is vital that the Assembly Government helps to promote sustainable transport advice across the country, so that we can make real progress towards reducing our carbon emissions from this sector."
