Montgomeryshire AM Mick Bates is pleased to have the support of the British Liberal Democrat delegation in the European Parliament as he continues to campaign against the introduction of electronic identification of sheep (EID) into the UK.
Having liaised with Liberal Democrats in the European Parliament, calling for their support in objecting to the introduction of compulsory electronic individual identification and recording of sheep, Mick is pleased that the Lib Dem MEPs share the growing concerns over this scheme and have taken a united stance calling for the proposal to be scrapped.
Commenting Welsh Lib Dem AM Mick Bates:
"Electronic identification is a completely ill-conceived concept that will devastate the agricultural industry here in Wales. Farmers simply cannot afford to implement this scheme, as over the past few years production costs have risen while farm gate prices have remained stagnant and farm incomes have suffered as a result.
"At a time of economic downturn, it is crucial that we give as much support to our national industries as possible and do not allow red tape regulations to damage our agricultural industry. It is vital that the industry and Government stand united on this issue and press the European Commission to give individual countries the choice over whether they implement this scheme.
"I am pleased that our Liberal Democrat MEPs have adopted a strong line against the introduction of EID and share my view that it would impose a completely unnecessary expense and burden on farmers.
"I will continue to work hard, alongside my colleagues in Westminster and in Europe, to campaign against the introduction of this bureaucratic scheme which would be a very unwelcome and unnecessary burden on our agricultural industry in Wales."
