Montgomeryshire AM Mick Bates has claimed victory in his long running campaign to bring road safety to Four Crosses near Welshpool.
The Assembly Government has announced that work is to start on the Four Crosses bypass in the Autumn of 2009. Mr Bates, who was first elected as an Assembly Member ten years ago, has in partnership with the community of Four Crosses campaigned over the life of the Assembly for the development of this crucial infrastructure improvement.
Mr Bates said: "This is a great victory. This has been 40 years in the campaigning. The residents living on the trunk road have been raising this as a safety issue for years. I first raised it during the first Assembly and have been lobbying ever since.
"Not only will this bypass benefit the residents by removing heavy goods vehicles from the heart of the community, but it will also improve journey times for people travelling between North and South Wales.
"I also pay tribute to the work of the community council in keeping this campaign alive over many years."
Notes:
