Commenting on the Statement by the Deputy First Minister and Minister for the Economy and Transport: The Rail Programme and Re-prioritisation of the Trunk Road Forward Programme, Montgomeryshire AM Mick Bates:
"The announcement by the Minister today offers a mixed bag for Mid Wales on transport plans. Some of the road proposals included in the forward programme have a significant safety aspect and where they are improving the safety of communities, obviously they will have our support.
"In light of this welcome the Assembly Government's statement that work will start on the Four Crosses bypass in the autumn of 2009. There have been serious concerns raised by residents over safety on this road and after 40 years of campaigning this is a great victory for the local community.
"The Newtown by-pass remains high ranking among the Assembly Government's plans and is planned to be ready to start between April 2011 and April 2014. I will continue to campaign and pressure on the Labour-Plaid Government, to ensure that this project is not delayed any further and at long last the Newtown by-pass is built, to improve the safety along this route.
"However, I am disappointed that the A470 improvements at Llandinam and Llangurig are on hold, as are the A458 improvements from Sylfaen to Cyfronydd.
"Equally disappointing is that we will have to wait for a further statement on the plans for the Cambrian Line, in particular the re-opening of Carno Station. It is essential that the very real need to stimulate the economy in this difficult time is not used as an excuse to move away from long term transport investment into greener forms of travel. There must be more urgent support for improvements to our rail infrastructure in Wales, as well as more investment in rolling stock."
