Montgomeryshire AM Mick Bates has given a warm welcome to the election of Kirsty Williams as the new leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats:
"The campaign was well fought by both candidates but I am delighted that party members across Wales have chosen Kirsty as the leader to take the Welsh Liberal Democrats forward into an exciting new future.
"Kirsty offers a new direction for the Welsh Liberal Democrats and will be an inspirational leader who will engage across the generations to bring new members into our party.
"It is time for change and I know that Kirsty has the energy and vision to reach out across the whole of Wales, to expand our membership into new areas across the country where people have lost faith in the tired Labour-Plaid Government.
"I believe that Kirsty has the ambition and enthusiasm that will carry us forward and put the Liberal Democrats at the centre of Welsh politics. I have supported Kirsty throughout the campaign and I look forward to continuing to work with her in the years ahead."
Notes:
In this historic election, Kirsty gained 60% of the members vote while Jenny Randerson gained 40% of the vote. The all member ballot saw a turnout of 69.44%.
