Commenting after a positive meeting today with managing directors of Stadco in Llanfyllin, following the announcement that the car part manufacturer is to shed two thirds of its 153 strong workforce, Montgomeryshire AM Mick Bates stated:
"I am pleased that managing directors within Stadco have confirmed that the plant in Llanfyllin will be retained. There will be no redundancies before April and while this may be cold comfort at present, I will continue to lobby the Assembly Government to retain as many jobs as possible.
"Around 60% of the workforce at Stadco lives within a 5mile radius, so the impact of these job losses on the local economy would be disastrous.
"Many businesses are suffering in the current climate and over the past year we have seen the loss of many valuable services from our local communities. We must fight to retain business and investment within rural areas, to prevent our communities from slipping into further decline.
"The economic crisis is already having a devastating impact on families and will only be made worse by the prospect of job losses. I urge the Government to offer all support possible to Stadco and to all families affected at this difficult time.
"In the New Year, when more details are known about the potential job losses, it is crucial that the Assembly Government acts to provide support for all those affected, as well as financial advice and information for all individuals on redeployment, re-skilling and re-training."
