Liberal Democrat Shadow Minister for Rural Affairs, Mick Bates AM, has welcomed the news of a £4.5million research boost for Hybu Cig Cymru projects to improve the Welsh red meat industry.
HCC has received a total of £4,560,000 for three projects under the Rural Development Plan for Wales which is part financed by the European Union through the European Agriculture Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) and the Welsh Assembly Government.
Commenting, Montgomeryshire AM Mick stated:
"The announcement of funding for research is a welcome boost for the red meat industry in Wales. In the current economic climate we need to maintain our local primary produce, to support our local farmers. This funding will help to safeguard food security and ensure that the red meat industry can play its part in the future prosperity of the agricultural industry in Wales.
"I was pleased to chair the Red Meat legislation committee, which has scrutinised and supported the Assembly's application for power in relation to the red meat industry in Wales. I hope this will enable better promotion and development, to ensure that we can fully address the needs of this industry in the future."
