ÖPIK ACTS TO STOP SPIRALLING CONCERNS OVER WINDFARMS

February 5, 2009 9:43 AM

Following the announcement of a major expansion of wind farms in the Montgomeryshire area, Lembit Öpik, Liberal Democrat MP for Montgomeryshire, has organised a series of meetings around the county, to gauge public opinion about the schemes. The first of these meetings will be on Friday 13th February in Llanbrynmair Village Hall at 5pm with a presentation from Conservation of Upland Montgomeryshire.

Commenting ahead of the meeting, Lembit said:

"There's been a lot reaction to the wind farm proposals. Some people support them, others are extremely concerned about the environmental impact they'll have on our landscape. There's also the question of years of heavy construction traffic trundling through the area, as well as the power cables which will come too.

"I'm holding a series of meetings to give the public the chance to have their say. It would be good if those opposed, in favour and just interested in the subject turned up - that way we can get an idea of the true opinion towards these plans.

"I intend to use the feedback I get to inform my representations in the planning process. People ask about my own view. In fairness, I should say I'm personally not keen on turbines because they do have a significant local impact, and also they don't produce very much energy. It's a variable wind dependent power source, and there's no electricity when the wind doesn't blow - or blows too hard. But I'm not forcing my views on others. My primary duty is to represent the public's view, and this is why the meetings are so important.

"I hope people will take advantage of these events, and do their best to turn up. They'll last about an hour, not the whole night. If people are able to make it for 60 minutes, that would be great. I hope these meetings will stop us going round in circles when it comes to the decision making on these planning applications."
