Lembit Öpik, Liberal Democrat MP for Montgomeryshire, is holding a summit meeting this morning with the Secretary of State for Wales Paul Murphy MP to discuss the growing problems that small businesses are facing in his constituency as well as the proposed job cuts to manufacturing business Stadco due to take place later this year.
Commenting ahead of the meeting, Lembit said
"I'm looking forward to discussing with the Secretary of State the tightening grip that banks are holding small businesses with - either in refusing loans or overdraft extensions.
"I know that the Secretary of State is taking this problem very seriously. I hope that the meeting will help give support to my constituents for whom the reality of the economic downturn is becoming ever starker.
"Stadco is still set to shed jobs this year and it's just an example of the kind of challenges facing us at the moment. A serious support package for small and medium sized firms is the single most important thing for us round here right now. The meeting will help establish the extent to which the Government is in a position to really help in this way. I hope they can. We'll find out."
