Lembit Öpik, Liberal Democrat MP for Montgomeryshire, will be holding three more meetings this week to establish further his constituents' feelings towards the proposed expansion of windfarms in the area.
Commenting on the first two meetings that took place on Friday (13th February), he said:
"Both meetings were very well attended, with representatives from the industry and others in clear support of windfarms, as well as those opposed in attendance.
"In a well informed debate, environmental questions were considered in depth. Also the vexed question of power cables was discussed at length with a strong preference for underground cables being expressed at the meetings.
"It's too early to talk final solutions but quite certainly the environmental case is far from clear cut. While the wind farm industry is perfectly entitled to want to build windfarms, the Government has some proving to do if it wants to convince people living near them that the environmental benefit well exceeds the ecological cost.
"These are all points we will be pursuing in the forthcoming meetings."
