Montgomeryshire AM Mick Bates has today defended Montgomery CHC in the chamber following the launch of the Welsh Assembly Government consultation last week on the future of community health councils in Wales.
The consultation proposes one CHC for the whole of Powys, with two 'Area Associations' that will undertake functions of its CHC at a local level, then advise its CHC of the local views.
Commenting Mick stated:
"The Welsh Assembly Government consultation launched last week on the future of community health councils in Wales places significant importance on engaging all citizens at a local level.
"However this is a service that is already delivered by the Montgomery CHC, which operates so well and does such fantastic work in representing the people of Montgomeryshire in all aspects of the NHS.
"CHCs have an essential role to play as independent bodies representing the interests of patients and supplying advice, advocacy and mediation services and it is vital that this service is not undermined in the future.
"I am concerned that this proposal will only add a further bureaucratic layer into the process, which will be no improvement to the current system but may in fact threaten the ability of CHCs to talk to people down on the ground and continue to represent their views as they do so well."
