Liberal Democrat Shadow Minister for Rural Affairs, Mick Bates AM, has written to the Minister Elin Jones calling for an urgent review of the profitability of the Welsh Dairy Sector as the Welsh Government continues to deny that the dairy industry in Wales is on the verge of collapse.
Commenting, Mick stated:
"I am extremely disappointed that the Welsh Government continues to deny the dire situation currently facing the Welsh Dairy Industry. I continue to raise the plight of the dairy sector in the chamber, only to be told in response that the dairy industry in Wales is in 'robust health' and is much stronger that it has been previously.
"I am deeply concerned that many farmers who have recently started to regain confidence in the dairy sector will soon be forced to abandon their plans for dairy farming for good if the Welsh Government does not take action to secure the future of this industry.
"Since New Year the farm gate price paid to dairy producers has plunged with Arla, First Milk, Wiseman and Dairy Crest all cutting the price they pay to farmers. Poor labelling of imported produce in supermarkets is undermining our local produce and at this difficult economic time when farmers are struggling to cover their production costs this is having a devastating impact on the industry.
"Processors and supermarkets alike must pay a fair price to farmers. It is crucial that the Minister meets with supermarkets and large retailers to ensure that farmers receive a fair price for their produce to bring stability back to the industry.
"I have written to the Minister Elin Jones calling for the Welsh Government to conduct an urgent assessment of the profitability of the Welsh Dairy Sector and to offer any support possible to this extremely important area of the agricultural industry in Wales, so that we can ensure we build a sustainable dairy industry in Wales for the future."
