Welsh Liberal Democrat Shadow Spokesperson for the Environment, Mick Bates AM, has called on the First Minister in the Chamber to take more action to support the continued development of wind power in Wales, which can offer millions in community benefits and help regenerate local communities at a time when economies across Wales are feeling the impact of the current financial climate.
Commenting Mick stated:
"According to the latest figures I have received for the development of wind power in Wales, since 2005 when TAN 8 was published, only 47.6MW of installed capacity is now operational and a further 11.7MW under construction. This totals less than 60MW in operation or being built, against a target of 800MW by 2010.
"If the total capacity for the Strategic Search Areas in Mid Wales was reached, this would give around £25million in community benefits which could be used to regenerate local areas, support local projects or organisations and stimulate our rural economies.
"I have urged the First Minister to take more action to support the continued development of wind power in Wales, which can offer such huge community benefits at a time when our economy and services are suffering, to ensure the survival of our rural areas for the future."
