Lembit Öpik, Liberal Democrat MP for Montgomeryshire, today met with law firm Milwyn Jenkins to discuss the closure of Nationwide's service in their office in Llanidloes.
The Building Society proposed to close the branch in Llanidloes when the service became unsustainable due to a combination of various factors, including low sales.
Commenting on the meeting, Lembit said:
"I was quite taken aback by the strength of feeling in Llanidloes over the possible closure of the Nationwide office.
"This isn't nostalgia, it's a fear of losing a vital component in the town's financial mix. Furthermore, it's not quite clear that there's room for negotiation over the terms of trading but I hope the Nationwide central office will take up that offer.
"Although I don't want to create any false hope, I do feel that, with a rational analysis, and agreement to the right business terms, the company might see fit to give the branch a chance to stay open.
"I'm doing all I can to facilitate this, and the next step is, I hope, a meeting between the Llanidloes team and the central management. It's not saved yet, but at least everyone's talking."
