The Budget will do nothing for ordinary residents of Montgomeryshire, who have been clobbered by rising food, fuel and transport prices, local Liberal Democrats Lembit Öpik MP and Mick Bates AM have said.
The Budget was criticised for failing to give much needed help to those struggling in recession by refusing to back Liberal Democrat calls to cut income tax by £700 for the vast majority of people.
Commenting, Lembit Öpik MP for Montgomeryshire, said:
"As the cost of food, heating, water and transport continue to rise, families in Montgomeryshire haven't been given any practical help by the Government.
"Britain's taxes are too heavy on those who can least afford it and too easy to avoid for those who know how.
"I am particularly disappointed in the Chancellor's determination to drive already struggling pubs to the wall. The rise in alcohol duty will only increase pressure on local pubs, and I expect we will see the number of pub closures rise over the coming year."
Mick Bates, AM for Montgomeryshire, added:
"With the rising cost of living and increasing energy prices, people who aren't on huge salaries are noticing more of their cash is going on the basics. More and more people are being plunged into fuel poverty, struggling to make ends meet.
"The Liberal Democrats have identified a tax loophole which could put £700 back into people's pockets at a time when they most need it. Instead the current Labour Government has condemned us to years of unemployment and a decade of debt - the country deserves something different."
