A recent parliamentary question asked by Lembit Öpik, Liberal Democrat MP for Montgomeryshire, has revealed that of the 203 cases completed by the Equality and Human Rights Commission, only 4 originated in Wales.
Between October 2007 and 31 March 2009, the Equality and Human Rights Commission completed 191 cases originating from England, 8 cases from Scotland, and 4 from Wales. The Commission website also states that Commission has "recently written to the heads of all public bodies in England and Scotland to remind them of their legal responsibilities under the public sector duties to promote equality and eliminate discrimination."
Commenting, Lembit Öpik said:
"This looks to me like the Equality and Human Rights Commission works almost exclusively for England, which has taken up 94% of its time.
"I also understand from the Commission's website that it has recently met with heads of public bodies in England and Scotland, but it doesn't appear that they have met with Welsh public bodies as well.
"I have written to the Chief Executive of the Commission to ask why they have only written to public bodies in England and Scotland. At best this looks sloppy, at worst they could be severely neglecting their duty to equality in Wales.
"The Government must make sure the EHRC is working for the whole of the United Kingdom, and that includes Wales."
