Having already fought a long campaign to keep the local Nationwide building society open, Llanidloes solicitors Milwyn Jenkins and Jenkins have committed today to consider all options in making sure that there is a building society in its offices in Llanidloes.
The campaign is backed by local MP, Lembit Öpik, who is concerned that the local community should have access to a choice of banking services and do not have to travel long distances for their banking needs should the Nationwide branch based in Llanidloes go ahead with its planned closure.
The solicitors have issued a statement today, saying:
"We are totally committed to ensuring the continuation of a mutual Building Society presence in Llanidloes. We consider this to be of utmost importance and are actively considering all options.
"Please bear with us in the meantime."
Adding to this statement, Lembit said:
"I believe that closing local building societies puts at risk the recovery of the local economy. We have seen a real downturn across Montgomeryshire, with local services and shops closing regularly. This planned closure could push the economy further into the ground.
"I urge local residents not to transfer their money to any other bank or building society at the moment. There's no risk whatsoever to their savings and they already know the excellent service they've received in the past. With a little patience, I've no doubt they'll continue being able to enjoy such a high level of service in the future.
"It is important that, in the meantime, the local community does all it can to assist thereby ensuring the continuation of such an important service."
