Commenting in the Chamber, Montgomeryshire AM Mick Bates has called on the Welsh Government to take action to tackle the shortage of affordable housing in many rural areas.
Commenting in the Chamber Mick stated:
"There is a severe shortage of affordable housing in many rural communities. Parts of rural Wales have experienced some of the largest increases in property prices over the last few years, further excluding local lower-income house-seekers.
"Creating a sustainable future for rural communities in Wales means making sure that there are places for people to live, work and learn in the Welsh countryside. I was pleased to note the Welsh Government consultation last July on new ways to boost the availability of rural and more affordable housing for local people working and living in the countryside, but it is crucial that we see real action as a result.
"I am urging the Welsh Government to work with the Minister for the Environment to take action to increase the availability of affordable rural housing, which has the potential to play a crucial role in maintaining people, in particular young people, in our rural towns and villages, so that we have sustainable and thriving rural communities in the future."
