Shadow Minister for the Environment and Sustainability, Mick Bates AM, has expressed concerns about the proposed changes to the Private Water Regulations by the Welsh Government, which would require that all commercial supplies, no matter how small, be risk assessed 2 or 4 times a year and could raise the cost from £70 to over £600 per year.
Commenting, Montgomeryshire AM Mick stated:
"I am deeply concerned about the impact of the proposed changes on many rural businesses which may already be suffering from the economic downturn.
"Currently an owner of a B&B with a private water supply is charged £70.30 annually but under the proposals this could rise to £610, around nine times the current rate.
"Clearly this is an unsustainable increase and would threaten the future of many small businesses across Wales, including B&Bs as well as others on private water supplies such as schools, caravan sites, holiday cottage owners and dairies.
"The current consultation ends on June 8th and I will be responding to raise my concerns that the proposed increased will have a seriously damaging effect on many small businesses in Powys."
