Bates urges local charities to apply for BIG 'Response to Recession' funding

Montgomeryshire AM Mick Bates is urging local third sector organisations to apply for new funding of £2.5million allocated to Wales by the Big Lottery Fund.

The Big Lottery Fund (BIG) in Wales is launching a package of measures to assist communities and to support third sector organisations during the recession, revitalising communities by giving people improved access to advice and advocacy services. New funding of £2.5 million in Wales has been allocated by BIG's UK Board.

BIG will prioritise voluntary and community sector organisations providing advice services including income maximisation, benefits, financial literacy, debt, mental health and domestic violence. Applicants can apply for up to £50,000 revenue funding over a two-year period, with a maximum of £25,000 per year.

Welsh Liberal Democrat AM Mick Bates stated: "In the current climate voluntary organisations and charities are under particular pressure without a secure source of income as cutbacks continue to be made during this recession.

"The Big Lottery funding for Wales is welcome news and will provide crucial support for these organisations, so that they can continue to provide the valuable advice services that they offer to local communities.

"As more and more people are facing tough times and in need of advice on income maximisation or debt management, I urge local third sector organisations to apply for this funding, to expand their services to meet this extra demand."
