A series of new log cabins in Carno is hoped to strengthen tourism in the area.
Dwr Y Felin cabins have been constructed from a sustainable source of wood in Estonia by Estonian builders. The cabins have been fitted with solar panels for the water heating system, and use a "ground loop" system to extract heat from the ground for the underfloor heating. They are carbon neutral, with the majority of work done by hand.
Hugh and Sarah Humphreys own the cabins, and Mr Humphreys said of the development:
"We wanted a high quality product and we found such an example from Estonia.
"Every effort has been made to make sure that these cabins use sustainable resources and respect the landscape around them. We are currently looking at making sure that the cabins have recycling and composting facilities for visitors to use."
Later last week Lembit Öpik, Liberal Democrat MP for Montgomeryshire and Treasurer for the All Party Parliamentary Group on Sustainable Housing, visited the three new cabins, two still under construction, to find out more.
Lembit is Estonian by heritage and commented:
"I am delighted that these Welsh-Estonian economic ties have played a key role in making these developments sustainable. My own Estonian roots have always convinced me this is a potentially profitable relationship. I am extremely proud that the tourism industry in my constituency takes such care to promote and respect environmental sustainability and the natural environment even in such uncertain economic times.
"I congratulate the developers on achieving such high quality cabins and I'm eager to ensure that this is not the end of such links but the beginning. Wales and Estonia have a lot in common and I'll be taking active steps to try to expand what Dwr Y Felin has started into other areas of local business to the benefit of our county and their country."
