Commenting, Liberal Democrat MP for Montgomeryshire, Lembit Öpik
has raised concerns about the continuing rise in the number of people unemployed to around 2.47m, a 14-year high. The number of unemployed claimants in Montgomeryshire constituency last month was 1,016 - a huge 52% jump compared to a year ago.
Lembit said "the Government have continued to promise more funds and job creation. But unfortunately, this just hasn't succeeded in stemming the flow of people out of work. The depressing fact is that more young people are jobless than at any time since records began.
"It would have been better to have scrapped the VAT cut and use the money to create thousands of paid internships for young people. Otherwise we risk creating another lost generation of this recession."
"The biggest problem at the moment is that vacancies are at an all-time low, with hundreds of people applying for each job in some parts of the country. I'm pleased to have been able to secure jobs in Montgomery town and Llanidloes - but there's a great deal more to do before the one thousand jobless people in our area return to work. This goal has to be our - and the Government's - highest economic priority."
