10:10 campaign highlights WAG's woeful One Wales target - Mick Bates AM

Following the launch of the 10:10 campaign to unite every sector of British society to achieve a 10% cut in the UK's carbon emissions in 2010, Shadow Minister for the Environment and Sustainability, Mick Bates AM, is calling on the Welsh Government to be more ambitious and sign up to the 10:10 campaign, if it is serious about making progress towards a zero carbon future.

Welsh Liberal Democrat Mick Bates AM stated:

"Achieving a 10% cut in carbon emissions in 2010 is a bold target but this ambition is crucial if we are to avoid the most devastating impacts of climate change which we could be facing over the next few years.

"For too long the Government has been complacent and failed to take real action to tackle climate change and harness the renewable energy potential of the UK. With the Copenhagen Climate Conference on the horizon, now is the time to act to protect our environment, to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels, improve energy efficiency and develop a clean, green and decentralised energy source for the future.

"The 10:10 campaign sends a clear message to the Welsh Government that the One Wales target to reduce carbon emissions by 3% per year from 2011 is simply inadequate and does not commit the Welsh Government to action beyond the next Assembly term.

"The Welsh Government must aim high with an ambitious target that they can achieve over the next year. If the Labour-Plaid Government is truly committed to a zero carbon future, I urge it to sign up to the 10:10 campaign and pledge to take firm action to reduce our carbon emissions, so that Wales can play our part in the battle to prevent the most devastating impacts of global warming."
