Montgomeryshire Lib Dem MP Lembit Öpik has praised the arrival of new European funds to help reduce the flood risk in Montgomeryshire.
Lembit said "£6.1 million has been announced by the European Union, specifically to help Wales deliver a better flood defence strategy. Given the vulnerability of large parts of Montgomeryshire to flooding, this is very welcome news. I understand the two projects that are being started in the Welshpool area will be around the Lledan and Ceunant Brooks. These will help protect homes and land from flooding, which is just as well given the increasing extremes of the climate in recent times.
"I'll be working to represent local wishes to the Environment Agency and Welsh Assembly, as we take this forward. Hundreds of homes are at risk, specifically because of the volumes of water the River Severn carries through our county. This money is a good start to help with a proper flood management strategy. But I know we'll need to be creative, and spend more, to make sure the threat is dealt with comprehensively."
