The fight continues to save Shop Direct from closure. Local MP Lembit Öpik has been speaking in Parliament to ask Government Ministers for more to be done. Lembit is running a campaign to find a buyer for the Shop Direct's Newtown Call Centre so that the 180 jobs can be secured.
Lembit has received undertakings from Welsh Secretary Of State to provide government help. Options of retraining and work opportunities were also discussed with a pledge from Welsh Secretary Of State that he will do all he can to work with Lembit to save Shop Direct.
Speaking in Parliament Lembit said "Is the Secretary of State willing to intervene directly, as it seems to me that that would increase the chances of making such a transfer in order to save 180 jobs?
Lembit continues "I am now approaching other firms to offer Newtown's Shop Direct premises as a going concern."
