MICK AND LEMBIT HIT THE STREETS FOR THE GREEN TAX SWITCH

11.09.10am BST (GMT +0100) Thu 26th Oct 2006

Montgomeryshire AM Mick Bates and MP Lembit Opik will be holding a street stall on Saturday at 2pm in Newtown Bear Lanes to campaign for the Lib Dems new Green Tax Switch Policies. The new policies include a reduction in income tax, with the emphasis switched to taxing pollution instead.

Commenting Lembit said, " This is an excellent example of national policies being taken to the people on the streets - a real 'old fashioned' way of doing politics.

The new Green Tax Switch policies offer a fair and environmentally friendly approach to taxation. Income tax would go down, and some of the lowest earners would be taken out of income tax altogether. With the emphasis put onto pollution, people with the most environmentally friendly lifestyles will pay the least. People in places such as Newtown can really benefit from these policies - and I intend to tell them about it myself!

Mick Bates added, "Climate change is one of the biggest problems we face today. The Green Tax Switch offers us a realistic and fair way to reduce carbon emissions, without unfairly penalising those who are worse off."
