Bates criticises WAG drive to cut Wales GB Rally funding
12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Tue 21st Apr 2009
Commenting on the news that the Welsh Assembly Government has withdrawn funding from Wales Rally GB, Montgomeryshire AM Mick Bates said:
"This decision is astonishing and a harsh reminder that the Labour-Plaid Government simply does not understand how to respond to the current economic crisis. The Wales GB Rally creates jobs and investment and at a time when recession is biting hard, this decision will lead to further job losses and cuts in inward investment into Wales.
"If Wales Rally GB is right in its assertion that WAG has a legal contract until 2011, then it is truly astonishing that WAG has taken this sudden decision to cut funding without any discussion. If legal action is successful, then it will end up costing the taxpayer and the stretched public purse even more than it would have done by continuing the funding.
"I cannot understand the drive behind this decision, which has cast the whole future of the Wales GB rally into doubt. I hope that the Labour-Plaid Government will wake up and realise the important role that this event plays in developing our automotive industry and supporting our economies in Wales and restores this funding so that the Wales GB Rally can continue."
