Save the River Severn
The River Severn/Afon Hafren is the UK's longest river, flowing through Montgomeryshire on the Welsh side of the border. A natural treasure enjoyed by residents across our county the River is under great threat.
Unfortunately the river is the most sewage filled in the UK with raw sewage being dumped in the River 2,656 times for 28,741 hours last year. Despite this Severn Trent gave out the highest payouts in bonuses of all water companies in the UK at £5.9 million. Liv Garfield, the chief executive of Severn Trent Water, has earned more than £17.3 million since 2014, making her the highest-paid in the industry.
Both the Welsh Labour/Plaid Cymru coalition in Cardiff Bay and the UK Conservative Government have failed to take action to protect the UK's greatest river. Our Conservative MP Craig Williams voted against tighter regulations on sewage dumping.
Unlike the big two parties we will always prioritise the environment and we have a plan to clean up their mess.
Back our plans to:
- Ban bonuses for Severn Trent & Hafren Dyfrdwy bosses and redirect funds into improving infrastructure.
- Demand the Welsh Government provides Natural Resources Wales with the funding and resources it needs to tackle & monitor pollution effectively.
- Install more phosphate removal facilities across our rivers.
- Introduce legislation in both the UK Parliament and the Senedd to ban water companies from dumping raw sewage in our waterways.
